THE TEST DRIVE MEME

Hello, True Believers!

This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun!

Be sure to read up on all game information and the "!event" tag to make sure you have all your ducks in a row.

"The Man"?

[Yu's pretty sure he hasn't heard that term before. Not as a negative thing, anyway.]

Don't you watch American movies? The Man! The guy in charge! Like, cops and stuff. Or the government.

[Adachi watches nothing but old cop and crime movies, sorry Yu. He shakes his head.]

You need to watch that stuff if you want to speak like a native.

[Or a character from a 70s cop movie.]

I see.

[Being Yu, he takes this advice completely seriously.]

Is there anything else you can recommend? I still have trouble understanding some of the in-jokes here.

You should watch TV, too. Talk shows and entertainment ones. Fun things people don't have to think about too much. But especially movies. That's where a lot of the jokes are from! People like to quote movies without telling you what it's from.

[Adachi would probably be better at giving this kind of advice if he had any friends at all, but he seems to be making a sincere attempt to help.

Without being prompted, he points his finger at Yu with his in the shape of a "gun" and switches to English, putting on his best American accent.
]

You've gotta ask yourself one question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

[Yu stares blankly for a moment, and switches back to English himself.]

I do have a lot to learn.

[Although...there's definitely something illogical about sitting around watching television to learn to communicate with other people. He can't put his finger on it, though, and it'd be rude to bring it up in the face of genuine-seeming advice.]

[With a sigh and a shake of his head, Adachi puts his finger gun away. Wow, Adachi's best Clint Eastwood impression got no reaction.]

Not much fun, are you, kid? It's a movie! Dirty Harry. See what I mean, it's easy not to know what people are talking about if you don't watch enough TV. And then you don't get the joke, which was really funny.

[Shh, talking to actual people is not necessary! It is just a pain in the ass. Listen to Adachi and his flawless English. You don't see him going around talking to people, and he's doing great.]

Just hang in there! That's what you're here in school for, to learn. I bet in no time you'll be better at it than an old man like me.

You would only be an old man if you were a TV character.

[See, he knows things. Just not American movies yet.]

And your English is very good.

[Adachi laughs.]

That's good, kid. Yeah, I heard in America, they lock up their actors over 40. Only let them out for a remake.

[He shakes his head at the compliment.]

I've been here a couple years, that's all.

[And he does study a lot. Sometimes there's not much of anything else to do.]

They call that full immersion. But kids' brains are better at learning languages, right? More flexible and stuff.
