THE TEST DRIVE MEME

Hello, True Believers!

This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun!

Be sure to read up on all game information and the "!event" tag to make sure you have all your ducks in a row.

Ain't that convenient?

[Al raises a brow, pacing over towards Rinka's seat. Pistol still resting lazily in his off-hand, he drums the digits of his other across her desk-top.

His next question is low and almost contemplative:]

How long you think you could keep that up for in one go? Without faltering.

If I'm not fighting or doing anything too strenuous, hours. It doesn't take much concentration. But in a steady fight, about fifteen minutes before I need to take a break.

[However, what she means and what she is implying are two opposite things. There are two facts about her power that Rinka keeps on a strictly need to know basis. First, that she can't phase through another human being. Second, that phased is actually her resting state while awake. If she doesn't constantly keep a small degree of focus she can slip right through the floor or something she's trying to hold. Surprise her and she might slip right through her desk.]

Fifteen minutes gives you a good headstart. Some asshole flatscan, doesn't know what he's up against, he probably wastes every bullet he's got, pumping rounds at shadows, before that's up. Gives you time to get away, too, if running's an option.

[Al doesn't have any compunctions against putting Rinka on the spot in front of the rest of the class, it seems. While he walks through the scenario matter-of-factly, the grip with the gun it in pantomimes (with hand safely off the trigger) an idiot human firing wildly in her direction.]

In this class, though, we're gonna be assuming it ain't.

So, what're you gonna do in fifteen minutes that keeps whoever's got enough brains to hold fire from planting one in yours, once you're nice and solid again?

[It's an open-ended question, but that doesn't mean it's rhetorical. Al lowers the weapon in his hand and waits for a response.]

[Rinka keeps one eye on the gun in his hand, not because she's worried it'll go off, but because you never take your eye off someone holding a gun. Ever. At his question though, she gives the teacher a small smile.]

I'm going to kick his ass. My father was a police officer. He has been my sparring partner since I was four.

[She reaches underneath her desk to shove a hand into her bookbag. When she pulls it back out, she has a collapsible police baton in her hand. She gives it a short flick to extend it, then spins it in a tight figure-eight pattern.]

Selective permeability. I might be intangible, but I can still make this tangible the second before it connects with his head.

Now we're gettin' somewhere.

[That earns a small nod of approval and a smaller quirk of Al's lips upwards. Rinka gets bonus points for carting around a concealed weapon to class.]

That takes care of the one stupid fuck packing heat, assuming you crack him on the head hard enough without slipping. Situation gets more complicated, though, if he's got back-up -- or if you've got it, and they ain't blessed with dodging bullets, same as you.

[Al edges backwards once again, sweeping a look around the rest of the classroom now.]

That's why our first order of business is going to be teaching the lot of you to handle yourselves in a fire-fight. How to use cover effectively, how to disarm a guy if you need to...and how to fire back, for those of you who ain't already hurling lightning bolts or whatever-the-fuck.

[Rinka returns her batons to her bookbag. Now the class is sounding more promising. While she doubts she'll ever opt to use a firearm in a fight even if it is available to her, she's already been up against people who use them. She'd been lucky when they'd gone to rescue Murasaki, next time she wants to be prepared.]

Sir, wouldn't the Danger Room be a better place for this sort of lesson?

All in good time.

[There's a sudden dryness to Al's tone that suggests this is classroom-appropriate idiom for, "When I damn well say so, now quit interrupting."

But since this lecture seems to be going along better as a dialogue anyway, he decides to roll with it -- and drops the Glock he's been cradling this whole time unceremoniously down onto Rinka's desk. She gets stared down for a moment, like she should already know what to do with it.]

Take that apart first. Empty it and then take apart the slide and barrel for me.

[The weapon's already unloaded, but Al doesn't bother to mention that explicitly.]

This isn't action movie bullshit. As painfully boring as it's gonna be for me, nobody's moving onto field training until you all know what the fuck you're dealing with. How to handle these things and how to use'em so the only ones who end up dead are the ones you want that way.

[Rinka looks down at the gun then back up at the teacher. Then back down at the gun. Carefully, she picks it up. It's heaver than she expected. After a brief inspection, she spots the small button that ejects the magazine. She relaxes a little when she sees it's empty. She then places the two pieces back down on her desk.]

That's all I know how to do. How do I take the rest of it apart?

[If she hadn't seen Kyotaro remove the magazine from a gun that one time, she wouldn't have been able to even manage that much.]

What, daddy didn't teach you that part?

[There's a small snrk from Al, before he reaches to point at a lever on the gun's side.]

Grip it in one hand, then pull back the slide with the other -- just far enough that you can unlock that. Then slip it off down the front. After that, you're gonna carefully lift the spring inside away from the barrel, then slide that off, too.

You got it, or should I take over?

My father doesn't have a gun. I saw that... from a friend. He grew up in a rough place so he'd seen guns before.

[It still bothered her a little that Kyotaro had so coolly handled that gun. It seemed so at odds with his usually warm personality. But perhaps if she'd grown up in that war torn nation, she too would have parts of her that could be cold like that. She listens to the teacher's instructions, then after a moment manages to dismantle the firearm. She lays each piece on the desk carefully, noting how they fit so she can put it back together properly if he tells her to.]

Like that?
