Eren Yeager | Attack on Titan

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-03 06:57 am (UTC)(link)
A:
[He hates it here. He wants to go back home, but he can't. They won't let him go back. Now he's stuck with all these—mutant freaks. He knows he's one of them, technically, but it isn't his fault. He didn't ask to be born this way. He'd change it if he could. There must be some way to fix it.

The Friends of Humanity took care of him, after what happened. It isn't true, what people say about them. They're not hateful. They're looking out for humanity.

He can't bring himself to go talk to anyone, and he doesn't know what to do, he's so full of nervous energy. That's how he came to be here, standing near one of the buildings, a scowl on his face as he angrily throws rocks against the wall.
]

B:
[He folds his arms over his chest.]

I don't see what the big deal is. You register guns, so why not mutants? If you don't have anything to hide, it'll be fine.

[Eren: good at popular opinions.]

B

[personal profile] niepokonany 2014-11-03 07:37 am (UTC)(link)
Are you like, actually serious right now?

[Feliks frowns, sitting with his front half sticking out of the gate to a very small castle, holding a toy pony in each hand. Like, god, what is it with the new kids this year and internalized mutant-shaming?]

Tell me you're not. You're totally not, right?
theveilisin: (Hello my dear flower)

And another B for good measure \o/

[personal profile] theveilisin 2014-11-03 07:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Luvander at first simply replies with a look of lopsided amusement. His own body language isn't nearly as tense, as he sprawls lazily on the couch which suddenly appears to be the next battleground in mutant politics, albeit on a fairly small scale.]

The problem, I would say - and you have to understand that I speak mostly from personal experience - is the very assumption that a mutant is a weapon, do you see? It rather implies some rather unpleasant things about our autonomy, doesn't it? [He flashes a rather sharp smile.] A gun cannot choose not to be used as a gun - but hopefully, the same does not go for us.
knighterrantofthedragon: Alric looking aside pensively (pensive)

B

[personal profile] knighterrantofthedragon 2014-11-03 08:03 am (UTC)(link)
[Alric looks a touch cross, but civil enough, and even amiable--he even flashes a slight smile, although he becomes more pensive as he goes on. After all, he has his own thoughts on this subject.]

...if I may.

The ownership of firearms is a choice one makes, and contrary to what one might hear, the owners of firearms are as a rule not particularly abused or persecuted for that choice. The condition of being a 'mutant' as the popular term goes is different in both these respects.

Furthermore.

Considering the recent rash of mutants hunted down and murdered by well-funded and well-equipped extremists seeking to harvest their organs, I would say concerns over the idea of a federal program publicly identifying mutants seem quite understandable. Particularly as there seem to be ties between those who supported those murders and those who not so long ago championed precisely this cause.

I do, of course, understand the public safety concerns involved. But how, precisely, does one go about applying such registration? Broad-based genetic testing at birth, perhaps? Even if we ignore the many broader ramifications of establishing that precedent for mutants and non-mutants alike... well, let's put it this way:

It becomes a question of whether a mutant is a citizen who happens to possess an assortment of exceptional abilities... or an assortment of exceptional abilities which happens incidentally also to be a citizen.

A - Action
[It's strange, coming back after so long. Finishing up his schooling, studying abroad in France for a year... and yet somehow, it feels like he's finally come home.

Right now, he's set himself up in the recreation room, idly flipping through a magazine he'd brought with him. He could definitely use a distraction at the moment.]

B - Network
[At first, there's some fiddling with the camera before the user sits back with a warm smile.] Hello, everyone. The name's Kirino. Some of you who were here before the incident might remember me and if you do, it'll be good to see you guys again. Otherwise... it's nice to meet you all in advance!

So. What have I missed?

[ooc: Just a quick note that Kirino's a little older than his icons will indicate!]

A.) Action

Apparently any curfews are broken today by one of the students, who is sitting in the kitchen at 2 AM with an impressive amount of food items in front of her. A carrot is dangling near her face, hovering by itself and glowing slightly in a golden-outlined hue.

She looks exhausted, as anyone would this late at night, but she seems determined to hover around the food as if she's either training or just really indecisive about what to eat. Finally, she takes a bite out of the carrot and shivers. Looking a little pale and as if she's about to throw up, she jumps a bit in fright as someone comes into the kitchen as well.

"I sorry! I was much hungry."

B.) Network

[A young Indian woman with what looks like a mass of golden freckles is staring at the phone, flipping it around a bit before she smiles softly.]

I never have this thing before, [she says in a heavy Indian accent and an obvious newness to English.] My name is Myra. I very happy to be here and learn from other gods.... um, mutants.

What're ya tryin' to do, break down the wall? There are probably some people who're better at it than you are skulking around, y'know...

Action - Coming to the Institute

An unknown trespasser has somehow managed to get into the mansion! A small, moving line of shiny crystals is making its way through the grass towards the Institutes's doors. For any telepaths, the small group of crystals seem to have a human mind, but it's horribly shattered into tiny, tiny pieces so it's impossible to read. As soon as the unknown entity runs in to someone, threatening or not, the crystals form a thin outline of a small girl's face, almost like a simple drawing.

"Help us, please!"

Action - As a Student

Something very shiny is sitting on the main stairs of the institute. It has the shape of a young girl, about 10-11, but seems to be made of glittery crystals rather than skin and bones. The student is missing an arm, crystals steadily dropping from the stump and then returning into her body as they fall on the knees she's hugging close to her chest. She's sobbing a bit, trying to make herself as little as possible. Someone had a bad day.

[You know how you can tell a band kid? And more than that, a drummer? By the rhythmic tapping and thumping you can occasionally hear in the breaks of conversation or during what should otherwise be quiet downtime. It's not badly played - in fact her sense of rhythm and even varying the sounds is remarkably good - but you know. It is a distraction.

If the way she's intently staring at her book, or at the teacher, or whatever she should be concentrating on is any indication, she's just doing it as one of those odd habits people have when they concentrate, so she barely realizes she's doing it and that it may either be annoying... or kind of impressive.]

Anyone else out there musically-inclined? -- Let me clarify: Anyone out there interested in jazz bands? I can't believe this school doesn't really have one yet. Unless they do, in which case, point me there.

Naoto Shirogane - Persona 4

[personal profile] shiroganeheir 2014-11-03 01:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Action - In the Library:
If there is one thing Naoto Shirogane hates above all others, it is not understanding what is going on. America is strange, and all of the language and culture she had read before coming here did not prepare her for this experience. Naoto did not want to be in school at all, however, her grandfather said it was necessary to control her abilities.

So, there is an androgynous, slightly anti-social figure in the library, studying with a dictionary pulled up on a laptop.

Network - Video:

[On the video feed is a solemn looking androgynous figure with blue-black hair and a very prominant blue hat. Naoto has a faint accent, somewhere between English and Japanese.]

Good afternoon. I am Shirogane Naoto, or by Western custom, as I must now remember, Naoto Shirogane. I suppose it would be good to introduce myself to you all as we will now be classmates. I am a consulting detective from Japan, and I believe that is all you need know about me for now.

[Eren gives a start and visibly recoils when what seemed to be a perfectly ordinary, inoffensive cat suddenly turns into a girl. Ugh, he'll never get used to being around these monsters. He scowls.]

I could break the wall if I wanted to break it.

[Although he doesn't want to do what he'd have to do to break it.]

But I don't. And I don't need any help.

[He picks up and throws another rock.]

Yeah, I'm serious!

[Turning to Feliks with a confrontational glare, he looks like the most serious 14 year old ever. Not like the kind who makes a lot of jokes.]

It's for everybody's good.
denialism: (xi.)

hi there!

[Adachi defaults to English, but his accent is stronger than Naoto's, though his English is very informal.]

Hey, a detective, huh? That's pretty great!

[He doesn't actually think it's great at all, but he smiles.]

Sounds like you'd like to join...

[Wait for it—]

The security club!

[He's going to put in some of the mandatory work on this dumb club he's supposed to be founding, so then he can say he followed the rules. He's not putting in a lot of effort, though.]
shiroganeheir: (eye on you)

Hi!

[personal profile] shiroganeheir 2014-11-03 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It is not as interesting as it might seem. There is a lot of work involved.

[There's a slightly-intrigued, but mostly confused look on Naoto's face.]

What is this Security Club, and what does it do?

[A pause, and then, bluntly,]

Are you from Japan as well? Your accent would indicate so.
garganteren: (04)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-03 02:36 pm (UTC)(link)
[Eren isn't amused at all. He's tense and as serious as can be, and he doesn't care for Luvander's attitude, glaring at him. He glares a lot, though, so it's not much different than usual.]

I didn't say it was exactly like weapons. But people choose to use the guns, and that's why they're registered to people. Mutants would be registered to themselves. So people would know what they can do!

And lots of mutants use their power to kill humans, so why shouldn't they do something to protect themselves? I speak from experience, too!

[Luvander's not the only one with experience around here, so there.]
niepokonany: (Y'all don't know me!)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2014-11-03 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[He stares up at the other boy for a moment, judging his seriousness, then rolls his eyes elaborately as he emerges from his little fortress. A moment later, it fades into a simple pillow fort; the ponies in his hands remain. The glare doesn't seem to have much of an effect on him -- Feliks is small, and anything but serious, but he has a serious problem backing down when confronted, or keeping his opinions to himself.]

Give me a break. There's something majorly wrong with you if you don't see the difference between a gun and a person!

denialism: (v.)

it's nice to see you here!

[personal profile] denialism 2014-11-03 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
You're telling me! I used to be a cop. I know all about it.

Oh, it's a new club on campus. You know, we uh, work on public safety issues and unsolved, um... To tell you the truth, the club's just starting up, so we haven't actually had our first meeting yet. So this is your chance to get in on the ground floor as a founding member, kind of decide the direction of the club.

[Especially as that would mean he wouldn't have to do it.]

Right, forgot to say, I'm Tohru Adachi, campus security's student liaison officer.

[Not a job he enjoys.]

Yeah, you guessed right. One hundred percent Japanese, born and raised.

[Though he tries to talk like he's from a Hollywood movie.]

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-03 02:54 pm (UTC)(link)
It's just an example! I don't think they're the same. [He huffs.] We've got to do something about the mutants who can just go out and kill people and not get caught for it! We keep track of people who might be terrorists. We all have social security numbers and things like that.

I'd sign up. I wouldn't care.
theveilisin: (The veil is in)

[personal profile] theveilisin 2014-11-03 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh no, my dear, it's not that easy. You see, a person buying a gun is, by definition, declaring an intention to use it. So the gun - which is an object - is registered in case this intention involves breaking the law. A mutant, on the other hand, does not choose to be born in such a manner, and their intentions don't enter into it.

[He smiles blithely, apparently unaware of the amount of anger facing him down. Anger is a reaction he is fairly used to, specifically because he's an infuriating little shit, and he's proud of it.]

Besides which, the least deadly thing about me is my mutation. As a normal human being, I can break your neck in at least seven different ways. As a mutant, I can save your life after doing so. So should I be registered simply for having been trained to kill people in perfectly mundane ways - and where do you draw that line? Am I a weapon? [Some deceptive calm there.]
shiroganeheir: (sideways hat tip)

A couple people on my Plurk list were posting about it, and I got an AU idea, so here I am!

[personal profile] shiroganeheir 2014-11-03 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah. So as it is a new club, you are not entirely certain what it does. I understand. I am likely interested in that. It could be useful to have a group who understands such things in case something crops up.

[A pause and a confused face.]

Are you implying, however, that there are unsolved cases here that need a resolution?

[Naoto sometimes speaks like a detective novel, so he has no room to talk.]

Ah. In that case, it is welcome to find another countryman here. A pleasure to meet you, Adachi-san.
niepokonany: (Giiiiirl I will cut him)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2014-11-03 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Look, I mean, it's fine if you're cool with every possible employer you're ever gonna have knowing your status -- which, by the way? Is totally not covered like at all under existing non-discrimination laws in 45 states and 159 countries? -- and every asshole with a gun who wants to make a point about the ~mutant threat~ having your home address. If that's where you're at, sure, totally not my problem.

But that's no reason to push everyone else into that. It's like, oh my god, do you even know what the rates of unemployment, homelessness, and being the target of violent crime are like for people with visible mutations? I kinda don't think it's "for everybody's good" to make it like that for more people, not less.

Plus, I mean, if you wanna protect the humans from getting hurt by mutants, maybe don't give them a list of people to go picking fights with? I mean, I kinda think that's in everybody's best interest, but what do I know, right?

[Who let Feliks study political science? It has done nothing to tone down the lack of professionalism in his tone, but has given him a lot of rhetorical ammunition, which has if anything only increased his sass.]
garganteren: (09)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-03 03:20 pm (UTC)(link)
[Eren is a little surprised, not having expected such a long and thoughtful answer. He shifts as Alric speaks, and at some points he opens his mouth to say something, but he listens.]

Using the power's a choice, too. It doesn't matter if you wanted to have it, you have it, and it's dangerous. Why wouldn't you just let everyone know, so they feel safer? It makes it seem like you've got something to hide.

[Certainly there's no reason mutants wouldn't want to be known!]

They found those people without any government list, so you can't blame the government for that.

I don't know how you'd do it... [He doesn't know about how that kind of thing works. He wasn't trying to come up with a plan.]

It's not that at all. It's a disease. You know, a mutation. It should be fixed.
garganteren: (09)

[personal profile] garganteren 2014-11-03 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
People get guns for self-defense all the time. And even though they're not going to use them to hurt someone except in an emergency, they register them. Only the criminals don't.

Human abilities are different! I'm talking about people who can knock down buildings and wipe out a town. They're like weapons of mass destruction. It doesn't matter if they choose to be that way or not, not if they can be that dangerous. It's not the same!

[Eren's been trained to be a soldier for years, so Luvander's story doesn't sound so strange to him. It confirms what he thinks about mutants. Of course they're training for a war on humans, just like everyone back home said.]

If your power's not that dangerous, then you'd tell them that.

Hey, now. I get that on the surface, it sounds like a good idea. But they used to call it 'registration' back in WWII as well, and then those registered were nicely put to death in big concentration camps.

It's a dangerous world out there, not just for humans fearing mutants.
