A berry? Krista took it into her emptied hand, looking it over. It seemed incredibly fresh, for this time of year... Well, you could get them anytime from greenhouses, right? But looking at the other girl, she somehow couldn't imagine her setting foot in a supermarket.

...Well, it could hardly hurt to accept, could it? It did look good, and whatever else anyone had done to her, it wasn't as if anyone had ever tried something as overdramatic as poisoning her. And what reason would this girl have to do a thing like that, anyway?

"Thank you."

She put the berry in her mouth. It was juicy and sweet, and she smiled a little as she went back to scattering the birdseed.

"You remind me of a sweet berry found on a frozen bush," she said simply, then began scattering her share of the birdseed closer to the trees. She knew not all birds would approach such large ambulatory creatures as they were, even for food, and she should not hold their hunger hostage against them. So for those who would not want to come close, food as well. For Rhia this was not about the joy of watching the birds eat, but knowing that they would. Some would say she was missing the point.

She wasn't quite sure what to think about that comment, but somehow, it felt good to hear all the same. The girl was strange, but what good had normal people done her before, anyway?

For a moment, she didn't understand why she was scattering the seeds so far away -- but a fluttering of wings in a nearby bush helped her understand. For her part, more than the joy of watching the birds eat, what she really enjoyed was the company. The birds were skittish, like any wild animal, but she wasn't a burden to them, and if she gave them something, they didn't much mind her being there. For a little while, she didn't feel so alone. Thinking about the birds who stayed hidden... That really was kind, wasn't it?

She resolved to try harder.

"What kind of berry would you be, then?" she asked, politely curious, starting to spread her own handful of seeds a little more broadly.

Rhia blinked, startled in two ways. One, no one had ever asked her that before, and two... well... few people ever asked her much of anything, really. She was still getting used to people. She thought about that, trying to find the human (English) way to respond before she finally said, "I try to be like the bush that grows no berries but shields the bushes that do from being spotted by those who would rip them up for their berries," she finally said, though she made a mental note to think about it more later.

A tree moved oddly overhead and she turned and waved her arms, making an odd whooooshing sound at her. There was the sound of wind without the feel of it, and she settled back down, laughing lightly, her laugh musical the way bells were musical, bright and light and fun.

So, what did berries represent, then? If she saw herself of having none of her own...

Particulars of the simile aside, something about the answer put her at ease. Perhaps it was the idea of being someone who shielded the good in others. Perhaps it was the word try.

(What was more important, she wondered? Who you were, or who you tried to be?)

"That's kind of you."

She braced herself against the cold of the wind when she heard it coming, but it never hit her. Confused, she looked up at the tree.

"...Did you do that?"

"Of course not, the oak did," she said, pointing to an oak tree that still had its leaves. She grinned a bit at the tree, the way one might at a friend, then smiled at the girl in a similar way.
martyrerkomplex: (I don't care what they think)

The... The tree had.

Not wind, then, but a rustling of leaves?

She felt somehow as if she'd been transported into one of the books she used to hide away in for days at a time.

"...By itself?"

"Of course by itself," she said, shaking her head, making her curls bounce. "Do you require assistance talking?" She asked with a grin.

She said it like it was so simple.

Then again, it did seem to match with her strange appearance. She was easy to imagine off in some forest, painting with all the colors of the wind or something.

"I just didn't think that trees could, that's all..." But there's no indication of contradiction in her tone, no sign that she thinks the other girl could be wrong.

"Trees can talk, just like any other living being," she said simply. "But people here don't seem to be willing to try and listen," she mutttered. "Like birds who bury their heads in the sand."
martyrerkomplex: (I would dial the numbers)

[personal profile] martyrerkomplex 2015-01-18 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
"I'm sorry," she said, though it wasn't really like she'd ever done a tree any wrong. At least, she didn't think she had?

"I just... didn't know?"

Rhia thought, then nodded, as if satisfied. "Now you do," she said happily.

Now, what sort of response would be best here? What would she want to hear?

"I'll try to be more thoughtful, from now on."

She nods. "Good," she said happily. She fished out two more berries, offering one.

Krista took one, and was content to sit and eat it in companionable quiet with the other girl.

And she sat, curling on the bench, chewing her better, watching the world beyond.
