"Thank you, kindly!" said Xercis emulating Josh. She began to tie all the wires into complicated knots. From her pocket she took out a piece of paper. On it were simple middle school math problems. Cerxis tied lots of knots in the wires until it looked like she was making bracelets. But instead, she unwove the wire when she was done. "I am finished!" she said at last. "Can you look?" she asked holding up the piece of paper. "This is... 'multiplication'? This is 'division'?"

Joss had pulled the calculator pieces closer to herself, wondering what, if anything, she could do with them, but then she noticed the integrate work of wire that Cerxis created.

She stood with a blank stare. It was a world apart from the sophisticated technology she grew up with, and yet she could not call it primitive.

When she was handed the piece of paper it crumpled slightly in her grip as her eyes darted over it.

"Sorry hun, but these here problem with the Xs are multiplication, and these here with lines are division. Ya got um mixed up but..."

Joss' eyes darted over the paper again, stopping to look up into her mind. Several times she whipped out her smart phone and tapped buttons, duplicating the problems on her calculator app.

"For what ya were doin, ya gotta um all right, cept..."

Joss looked over the wires again. "What were ya doin?"

"The knots make the numbers," said Xat-Cerxis. "It is something like an abacus. An abacus has beads to represent numbers. But we do not have beads. We have knots in different patterns. The largest and most beautiful knots are larger numbers. I can use the knots to count sets. Five and five and five and five is "5 times 4". One and one and one and one is "1 times 4". See?" Xat-Cerxis explained. "In my tribe of the Xat, we do not have 'electricity'. We do not have many machines for servants. We do what we can with what we have- what is simple. Teacher has said we live with nature but I do not see it that way. We are one of nature. We do not understand the ways of other men. But there are many ideas... many words and songs. So many it is difficult to know which ones to learn. There are bad teachers, and good teachers in this world."

When Cerxis' explanation first began, Joss imagined a circle of pre-Colombian Sioux women around a fire knitting their way through calculations, even though she didn't know for sure that Sioux women did so. When it was done she felt disconnected like she had gone back one thousand years in the past, yet connected to something else.

She shook her head a little so she could speak again.

"Wow. That's mighty sophisticated fer somethin that's got no electricity.I guess tech comes in all forms." Joss looked up to Cerxis.

"Can ya show me more?"

"You can learn," agreed Xat-Cerxis. "Hold some string! Watch my fingers. Watch shape. I will tie and you will follow." Slowly, Xat-Cerxis made some loops and then tightened them up by pulling on the edge of the thread. They made a simple knot. "One, two, three, four, five!" she counted as more tiny knots appeared. "Imagine every knot is a llama! We have five llamas! It is good to keep track," she said as if that explained everything about her counting system.

"Dam right it's good ta keep track of them llamas. There always tryin ta get out of their fence and cause all sorts a rucks. Dang those thangs bite."

Joss smiled after her statement to show she ment no offence. She then brought her gaze back to Cerxis' work.

"Can I try now?"
