Hello, True Believers!

This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun!


Be sure to read up on all game information and the "!event" tag to make sure you have all your ducks in a row.

Yu wanders around the new school, somewhat aimlessly. He's kept to himself so far - he was pretty confident in his English, but the experience was different enough that he wanted to get a feeling for it first before he gave talking to anyone a try.

He'd seen, if not actually attended, a couple of private schools in Japan, but this one was even more impressive with the open grounds and, he was pretty sure he'd heard, some kind of underground jet hangar. He was wandering outside at the moment, taking in the fresh air, architecture, and weird feeling of not being in Japan in between classes. Things were different here, and he was going to have to do some more looking around before he decided how they were different.

Meanwhile, he'll be taking a break on a bench and looking quizzically at a stray cat, wondering if it would run away if he approached it. This could go on for a while, so anyone who walks by should feel free to interrupt him.

[Sometime later, after the requisite introductions...]

Hello. Transfer student here again.

I think I missed the information earlier. How do we become superheroes?

A voice near Yu chuckled slightly. "You look like you've been busy, so far. Or the cat's magical or something."

The red-headed woman - mid-twenty-something, it seemed - chuckled a bit. The most obvious thing about her was the two pairs of bat-like wings - one at the sides of her head, the others on her back.

"I haven't seen you around before. You're new to the school?"

He turned, only a little startled at the sudden greeting, to look at the woman, and nodded.

"I transferred here just recently," he replied in a thick but intelligible Japanese accent.

He then turns back to the stray. "Do you have magical cats here? I've heard stranger things."

"I don't think so. The closest I know of is the Inhumans' giant hyperintelligent pit bull, Lockjaw," she responded. "Just came in, though? Settling in to the campus easily?"

Realizing now I only have one non-dour-looking icon.

"It's very nice here," he said, nodding. "I don't think I've seen a school this impressive before, and the people are very friendly."

"That's really how we are here. For a lot of us, our classmates are the closest to family we've got. For others, it's something simpler - identity. We fit in here like nowhere else."

She chuckled. "Doctor Carlyn Caimbeulach, librarian."

Yu froze for a second or two at that last name, but smiled and bowed slightly. "It's nice to meet you, Doctor."

As for your question, that depends... what do you mean by heroism?

Protecting justice and defeating evil mutants.

It's probably more complicated than that, but you know what I mean.

Well, there are many ways to protect justice. You could join a protest. You could write letters to the editor. You could become a lawyer and do battle against unjust laws, waging war in the courtroom.

You know, I'm not sure if I do know what you mean. "Evil". Now there's a word with weight. Would you care to define it for me?

That's an easier question to answer. They're ridiculous.

[Being a hero sucks. Killing half a city's population one at a time, being totally alone and psychologically haunted, getting betrayed by the one person you trust, doing more drugs than any one person should ever do...

Isn't this school connected to superheroes somehow?

Mostly just powers. Not everyone's a hero. I guess you can be a hero if you want, though...

[GRIMACE.] Swordfighting and video games are more fun.

I can't argue with that. Do you know how to sword fight?

No. But I made some swords out of paper towel rolls and Beast Boy and I pretend they're lightsabers.

I'm curious, what makes you want to be a super hero? I imagine your talent is more useful for it than mine.

Forgive me for replying, I'm answering your question with my own question, and I'm not even qualified to answer.

It seems like the most useful thing to do with a mutation. I think. I'm not totally sure how mine works yet.

I'm pretty sure mine isn't suitable for that at all.

I don't mean to be rude, but that's not much of a reason to be a super hero, is it?

Isn't it better than using your abilities for selfish reasons?

That's true enough. I was just expecting some deeper reason for a big decision like that.

I'm not trying to say your reason is bad! I think it's admirable, actually, to think like that.

If teachers in Japan OR America are believable, every decision I make between now and graduating college is a big decision.
