THE TEST DRIVE MEME




This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun!

We also ask that you please pardon our dust. We're working very hard to get this game up and running and hope to be open by September 1st!

Ah--still useful! At least you must not have to worry about rogue splashes and things like that.

[She takes a seat, sipping her tea as she starts to shift through the papers.] Slow and steady. I fear I'm going to be one of those teachers who assigns less work for my own benefit, it does take forever.

Mm. [ He flips over one of his, clearing a few multiple-choice questions before he resumes speaking. ] As long as their progress is adequately ensured, I do not think that would pose too much if a problem.

[ Though... ] How do you handle late submissions, if I may ask?

[She laughs softly] Well, I probably won't slack or something like that, it's just a bit overwhelming.

[She pauses] Well--Drop a letter grade for each day. We'll see how it works I suppose.

And how many grade tiers do you usually use? [ As a science teacher, it isn't something that he has touched in quite some time. ]

Mn, well the American style one, seven points a grade scale. Seven points is reasonable I think. Of course if they're sick or something comes up I would give them extra time.

[She taps her chin] Maybe I'm just more used to stricter grading types. I mean, mostly I do in class quizzes based on readings and things taught in class. I'd expect essays and projects to be on time though. The more time given the more I'd punish it for being late I suppose.

I teach two science subjects, so assignments all come with marks assigned to each question. The total score of a student is thus calculated according to how many marking points they score per section. [ Not much room for the benefit of the doubt here. ] There are marking schemes for all the units. Some teachers choose to use the seven point system or the traditional alphabetical system, but I prefer to list absolute score percentages and class ranking percentiles.

[ A pause. ]

As for late work... well. I usually give one or two days' leeway.

That must be nice, all that clearcut sort of thing. Grading subjectivity is why I could never do English class. A bit of personal judgement is alright but not when it's almost all on you.

[She smiles and shrugs] I probably should give a little leeway. I suppose I'm too used to how my friends were here. Give an inch take a mile. Maybe if they don't abuse it.

Subjectivity made it hard to be fair, and different teachers' standards could give vastly different scores. ] Though it does making setting questions a little difficult. Some students do try to appeal on the grounds that requirements are not set clearly enough.

[ He picks up his pen again. ] Most of my students know very well not to try me, so that's not too much of a problem. [ And for good reason too. He may be the calmest and most rational teacher in the department... but that also made his displeasure all the more terrifying. ]
