THE TEST DRIVE MEME

This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun!

We also ask that you please pardon our dust. We're working very hard to get this game up and running and hope to be open by September 1st!

[Shhhh let him have his childhood where he wants it.

To his credit, he was only going to play for a little while, and the lab report is nearly complete and not due for two days. If a little while turned into a long while he still would have been fine.]

Yeah, I'm almost done. [He relaxes, thinking he didn't get caught.] I just need to figure out if my conclusions make sense.

[ Ah. That was something he did not give detailed procedural guidelines for - it was something that would set the brighter students apart from the others. ]

Good luck with that, then. [ He comes a little closer, scrutinizing what Ken had typed on the screen. ] If you require any assistance, you can ask me.

[ Yes, he is a teacher. And not a college student. If his maturity hadn't yet given that away. ]

[Overall, his conclusions are sound. Worded a bit strangely in places, maybe, but Ken's an intelligent student...and postcognition helps when you need to review what you did.]

Oh, you're a teacher? [He makes no assumptions based on maturity. He may be twelve, but he's more mature than a fair number of high schoolers. Now he's even more relieved he doesn't seem to have been caught playing.] This isn't my best subject... We were dissecting sheep's hearts.

[ Ah, so Ken's class progressed faster than his. And he did notice the playing - just that he does not feel obliged to point it out just yet. Ken is almost done with his work, after all, and has not disturbed anyone. ]

Well, you are doing fine, from what I can see. [ Several more squeamish students in his class couldn't even complete it. ]

[He's less worried about any consequences of playing games instead of doing homework...it's more that he keeps his acting his age strictly in the closet.]

Good... It was kind of chaotic in the lab, I'm glad I was able to get through it okay. [Something about a boy using little chunks of heart to terrify the girls, someone claiming theirs was still beating...] Are the students here always that hyperactive, or was it just the experiment?

I believe it is the students. [ He says this with a slow blink. ] With proper self-restraint, the practical ought to be completed well within the allocated time.

[ His class was very well-behaved. He may be the most patient and calm teacher in the whole department, but that merely made his displeasure all the more terrifying. ]

I don't know why some of them were so afraid. The hearts were already dead. It's kind of childish to fear dead things.

[Ken's class... He's actually incredibly amused at the shenanigans, but would never let himself participate. Education is important, and he's had it easy for way too long to not get back to it now.]

[ He likes this boy. Logical, rational, and unyielding to frivolous whims. And a hardworking student, too. ]

[...Praise. Honest praise. Not something Ken's gotten without pity in a while, and it feels good.]

Even if the hearts were still beating, I don't think they'd be worth getting upset over. They wouldn't be able to do anything but bleed. -That sounds weirder than intended.

[He doesn't get upset over little things, it's not worth freaking out if there's no danger. But he can realize when he's said something that sounds too detached.]

That is very true, yes. [ He can understand Ken's thought processes. ] Though some students may be a little faint of heart.

[ Anyway. ] Might you have any interest in Biology, in general?

I guess so, but it's not really alive if it's just a beating heart. [Ken's got a few issues. Just a few.] It wouldn't be like actually killing the sheep.

[Anyway!] A little? I'm more interested in law enforcement, but knowing biology couldn't hurt.

[ Hmm. Probably not, then... ] I see.

Well, I am entertaining the thought of opening up a master class for advanced students. If you do find interest, especially in the medical field, feel free to contact me.

[ Though Ken's ethics are... interesting, to say the least. He has heard quite a few things about the child, not just positive feedback. Teachers do gossip sometimes, though he makes it a point never to contribute. ]

[Ken tries not to let his real intentions or history out to many people, especially not adults. Adults can't be trusted. At the same time, there are things that can't be hidden - the tragic 'accident' in his past, the way he was considered mentally broken rather than mutated before coming here... The fact he makes a point of never acting like the kid he is.]

It sounds interesting. I should've been in more advanced classes at my old school, but my aunt wouldn't let me. I'd like the challenge, I think.

[ It's a bit of a stretch, but he can somewhat empathize. Having a sibling who was driven mad by his powers and then murdered for it... it does quite a few things to one's psyche. His ability to keep calm did not just arise from his logical personality - often, he was the only one sane enough to make decisions.

And the only remaining member of his family has dedicated his life to vengeance. So. ]

Well, it is a class with practical rather than intellectual applications. I intend to teach in-depth content, yes, but your greatest takeaway ought to be first aid and medical skills. [ Because not everyone can just consult a general practitioner, and sometimes powers do backfire. ]

[Ken is a case of awful, if somewhat normal, circumstances lining up in the worst way possible. He keeps his own plans for vengeance hidden deep beneath the surface and lets people make what they will of him. At least here nobody will think the violence he sees all around him is just a hallucination...though he still won't talk about it. Not talking is totally a healthy way to handle things.]

That sounds useful. My abilities aren't suited for combat at all, so I should probably learn how to take care of injuries. [Law enforcement is dangerous....not that Ken intends to survive much longer after he completes his goal.]

[ You're doing a really good job of camouflaging your intentions, Ken, because even Takakage doesn't know a single thing about it. Oh, he has some vague hunches, but these instincts are totally leading him off to the wrong conclusions. He knows that you are hiding something, but what that something is still eludes comprehension. ]

I see. [ He doesn't quite know what the boy's skills are, but it doesn't exactly matter at this point. ] Well, I shall put your name down, then. It will be twice or three times a week, two hours for each session. Are you comfortable with that?

[Nobody ever seems to suspect the twelve-year-old with the innocent face to be plotting a murder-suicide. It would take a telepath actually prying to find out. So...Xavier himself might know. Might.]

That's fine. I'm looking forward to it. [He does want to be able to take care of people. Like his mom did. It feels like...giving back, and making up for the trouble he's caused.] Do you know when it will be starting yet?

[ He gives Ken a slow nod. ] Perhaps in the next few weeks. I will still have to estimate class size, as well as whether a selection test will be needed.

Yes, sir. Thank you very much for the offer.

[He looks happier than he did at the start of the conversation. He's confident he can pass any selection test. His aunt may have held him back in school but that doesn't mean he didn't study on his own time.]
