niepokonany: (She's a young girl talking about herself)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-01 09:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Feliks looks up with a start, setting his iPhone face-down on the table. God, where did this guy come from all of a sudden?]

Uh. Hi?

[Well, at least this guy probably won't make the face most Americans do about his name.]

...Feliks. Feliks Łukasiewicz-Flourite. [He's probably going to have to think of a way to shorten that last name for the students, actually. Just go with Flourite? No, then there'd be three Mr. Flourites kicking around school, plus it'd feel weird to give up his own name... Maybe just go with his code name around the kids?]

[...He realizes he's just been sitting there thinking about it for a little too long, and sort of abruptly puts his hand out to shake.]
truba: (семь)

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-01 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
A good name!

[Whatever the difficulty, Ivan seems impressed by the length.]

It is nice to meet you, Feliks Łukasiewicz-Flourite.

[The end does give him trouble. He does know languages other than Russian, in addition to the English he's currently speaking, but he has very little experience in speaking with actual non-Russians.]

What year are you in school? I am from St. Petersburg! This is my first time out of Russia. It is very exciting.
niepokonany: (I'm flying high defying gravity)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-02 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
It is, isn't it? Americans trip over it a bit, but I kinda like it.

[Compliments are really the fastest way to warm him up and bring out his natural perkiness, as long as they're not over the top enough to creep him out.]

I actually just finished college? Like a few days ago. And I'm from... Well, my family's from Kraków, I went to school in Warszawa when I was little, then Washington DC when my dad started working there, annnnnd I've been here for like... Oh my God, like 7 years, in the Fall?

[He can forgive the mistake, though, since people still mistake him for a high school student regularly. And the best thing about talking to people from other Slavic countries is not having to mangle the Hell out of Polish city names to have them understood.]
truba: (шесть)

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-02 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
Americans say my name strangely, too.

[But Ivan smiles happily about this and chuckles, as if the strange American pronunciations amuse him.]

College!

[Ivan leans in to peer at him more closely.]

Are you so old? But—congratulations on your graduation!

[He'd thought Feliks was around his age. He's still not entirely sure of his age, though... maybe he's a prodigy!]

I see. I would very much like to go to Poland! My father was in industry. For a long time, I lived near a small town in Irkutsk Oblast. I am sure you do not know it. Not so far from the wonderful Lake Baikal! But recently I returned to St. Petersburg. It is a very beautiful city! But living here so long, you must know everything about America. There is so much I do not know.

niepokonany: (+That's why her hair is so big)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-02 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Americans, right? Anyway, I'm 23, I'm not that old!

[He tilts his head a little, thinking back to his early school days when he still spent most of his time in Europe.]

Lake Baikal... That's like, way out east, right? I don't know where it is exactly...

And yeah, I'm basically like an expert on American stuff! So if you get confused about it, I guess I can help you out or whatever.
truba: (шесть)

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-02 05:23 am (UTC)(link)
Americans, yes!

[He... never really knew any Americans before this.]

But everyone is very friendly here. I like to meet so many new people.

[Though he's already used to people not knowing Russian geography. There's such a lot of it, after all.]

Lake Baikal is in south Siberia. The largest freshwater lake in the world, and very, very old. You are not so old as Lake Baikal. But older than me. I am sixteen.

[That was an excellent segue.]

Thank you! I will have to ask you many questions. It is all strange to me. But... now that you have graduated, will you leave?

[It would be a shame to lose a new friend he only just met!]
niepokonany: (Waiting on some beautiful boy)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-02 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the people here are totally great! Americans are way, like, outgoing and stuff, it's kinda fun.

[He blinks a little at that segue, but can't help laughing.]

Yeah, I guess it's probably at least a little older than me! But no, I'm not going anywhere. Like, I kind of have a lot of stuff going on here, still!

[He turns his clothes into his X-uniform, to demonstrate what kind of stuff he's talking about.]

Plus, my husband works here, so it'd be pretty weird if I bailed.
truba: (четыре)

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-02 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, it is a very good place to make friends, and I hope I will make many more.

[He loves making friends. It's the best thing. It's the most fun.]

A little older, yes. A few years.

[Ivan laughs, then pauses, growing thoughtful.]

That is your power? What did you do? Ah... Husband?

[He blinks, slowly.]

But you are not a woman?

[He's really behind on his U.S. culture. And culture in general. He wasn't lying. He just needs a second...]
niepokonany: (Too rough)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-02 07:27 am (UTC)(link)
[His expression grows more guarded, at that reaction. Russians have some issues about that stuff, don't they?]

[He picks up his phone, flipping through the photo album instead of looking at Ivan.]

Um, no, I'm not. Why, what's your point?

[He finds a picture of himself and Fai at a party a couple of years ago, curled up together on a couch, their arms thrown around each other's shoulders as they laugh themselves senseless at some private joke. It's from before they were actually together, but that's beside the point. He sets the phone face-up on the table, between himself and Ivan, and looks for a moment like he's sort of silently daring him to say anything bad about it.]

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-02 07:52 am (UTC)(link)
[For a moment, he wasn't sure if he'd been mistaken about Feliks' gender. But, no! Here is a strange new American custom. Ivan is behind the times even for a Russian, and due to the fact that he's been in virtual exile since childhood, his reaction isn't quite typical.]

I did not know that was possible! Laws are very different here, aren't they? Someone told me you need a license for a row boat.

[He leans in to look at the picture. He seems more confused and interested than anything else. He blinks at the screen.]

My phone has pictures of my dogs...

[He's not sure if this is a fair exchange, though.]

And Uncle Vova, but he's not very handsome to look at.
Edited 2015-06-02 07:58 (UTC)
niepokonany: (I just can't keep my fingers)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-02 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)
[His posture relaxes again, now that he's not bracing for a negative reaction. He even laughs a bit, at that last part.]

Well, not everyone can be as nice to look at as us! Dogs are pretty cute, though. Not as cute as ponies, but pretty cute!

Oh, and yeah, same-sex marriage has been cool in New York for... I dunno, like almost 10 years? We had the wedding here on campus. My grandmothers and aunts all came and cooked enough food for an actual army.
truba: (шесть)

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-02 03:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, and Uncle Vova is now too old. He's lost his hair.

[Ivan laughs and takes out his phone. He's only had it for a few months, so he's still enchanted by it. He wasn't allowed to have a phone while in exile.]

These are Sharik and Dozor!

[Instead of old Uncle Vova, he shows Feliks pictures of his Borzoi. Of course he has Russian wolfhounds. What else?]

I have had ponies and goats, but when I was younger. We did not have television in Siberia! They do have television in Siberia, but we did not have it. So I did not watch the news.

[He had a very weird childhood.]

We do not have such a thing in Russia. I should get you a present! What do you like?
niepokonany: (She's a young girl talking about herself)

And then I ended up reading an intense forum debate about wedding gifts in Poland

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-02 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
[[OOC: Apparently giving money is either the only way to go and terribly practical, or it's so rude and tacky what's wrong with you.]

Ohmigod, they're so cute! Haha, look at their pointy little faces!

[Dogs are definitely better than random old men he wouldn't know from Adam.]

A present? [For the wedding he had before even meeting this guy? ...Well, he guesses it's a kind of sweet reaction.]

If you want to, I guess! You don't have to, though, so anything's ok.
truba: (шесть)

Research is important!

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-03 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, very cute. They're good dogs, very well-behaved!

[It doesn't hurt that Ivan's power affects them somewhat as well.]

I had to leave them home because of the laws, but I'll see them again when I visit. I hope they don't miss me too much.

No, it is my pleasure! A graduation and a wedding, these things only come once in your life. So, then I will!

[Sorry, Feliks, you're friends now! And Ivan being Ivan and Russian and rich, he will be sure that Feliks receives a generous cash gift. And maybe some lovely Russian porcelain. That won't be awkward at all!]
niepokonany: (It's who I am. And it's my home.)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-03 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
I guess two dogs are probably a little much for a dorm room, huh? I know some people keep pets around here, though! Like, this is Mokona...

[He finds a picture of the (rather smaller) dog on his phone, displaying it.]

And yeah, I guess those are both pretty good excuses for a present! You'll just have to let me get you something cool when you graduate, then.

[That's going to be incredibly awkward. More so because Feliks is awkward at the best of times.]
truba: (девять)

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-03 05:10 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, I could bring them, they have their vaccinations, but I have a roommate, and the room is small. I do not think it will be allowed.

[Not that he wouldn't do it, but he's being polite and following the rules of his host country. And importing and exporting the dogs back and forth will probably make them unhappy. He looks at the dog on Feliks' phone, leaning in again.]

Mokona! Very cute, also! This is your dog? Maybe I could get another dog?

[A little, cute one. He likes dogs.]

You can get me something! I like presents. I am sure you will like yours.

[Since it's going to be a lot of money, and who doesn't like that? It's present enough for Ivan for Feliks to suggest that they will still be friends by then. He beams.]
niepokonany: ('Cause I'm Mr. Brightside)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-03 05:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, maybe you could! I know Feli used to keep a bunny around, it was way cute.

Mokona's not mine, though, she's Yuui's? My brother-in-law's. We babysit sometimes, though!

And good call, I give totally sweet presents.

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-04 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
A bunny?

[That's another excellent idea. He wants a bunny.]

So many good pets to have, it is hard to decide.

You are good brothers, then! Do you have a pet, Feliks?

I meant you would like the one I will give you! But I am sure you will give me a good present. You will have years to think of it. Probably I will not believe how good it is, it will be so good.

[Obviously, that's what's going to happen.]
niepokonany: (I think I'll try defying gravity)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-04 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
[He shakes his head.]

No, we don't have any pets. I keep pushing for a pony, but it's a no-go so far. Lame, right? I might have to settle for something a little smaller. Maybe.

[He doesn't really give up when his mind's set on something, though.]

And yeah, I'm sure they'll both be awesome!
truba: (двенадцать)

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-04 05:49 am (UTC)(link)
You should have a pet! Ah, you want a pony?

[Imagine if Ivan got Feliks a pony as a present. Because now he wants to get him one.]

Why should you not have one, if you want one? It could be a small pony!

They will be. Awesome.

[Definitely.]
niepokonany: (Get in loser)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-13 03:47 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, if someone's gonna get a pony, it should totally be big enough to ride on, but I'm not that big, right?

[...Not that he's thought about what kind of pony would be ideal for him, or anything.]
truba: (шесть)

[personal profile] truba 2015-06-13 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, you're very small, my friend! Me, I would need a much bigger horse.

[He laughs.]

For the best ride, maybe it should be a larger pony, not a very small one. Medium.
niepokonany: (Waiting on some beautiful boy)

[personal profile] niepokonany 2015-06-14 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Right, like a kind of average-ish pony!
