THE TEST DRIVE MEME

Hello, True Believers!

This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun!

Be sure to read up on all game information and the "!event" tag to make sure you have all your ducks in a row.

[Well, now this is just kind of depressing, and Carver isn't quite sure what to do about it. He shifts awkwardly, staying quiet before he finally asks:]

Where did you want to go, then? It seems like coming here is the best way to keep away from humans, if that's what you want to do.

[He's not the best at finding the silver lining, but.]

I didn't want to go anywhere. I wanted to stay where I was. My friends were going to take care of me.

[As he's Eren, and not subtle at all, he looks very obviously evasive.]

[SQUINTS

Is this a rabbit hole he wants to go down? Carver isn't sure. So, he asks:]

And this was going to remove you from society?

[Just so they're clear.]

I'm not a hypocrite!

[He really does hate hypocrites. So he feels he should point that out.]

If I say that about dangerous mutants, I mean me, too. And they were helping me!

[Carver winces, then holds his hands up, palms out and fingers spread.]

I wasn't calling you a hypocrite. I was asking a question. No need to jump the gun like that.

What were they doing to help?

I wasn't... People act like I say this stuff should be true of other mutants but not me.

[Though he has to admit, Carver didn't say anything like that. His less confrontational attitude makes Eren less sure of how to react.]

They were going to make sure I didn't hurt anyone else, that's all.

Well, it's a little hard to imagine someone wanting to be treated that way. That's all.

[But Carver will take him at his word! Eren certainly seems...earnest, if nothing else.

He folds his arms and shifts uncomfortably again, debating whether or not to let the subject drop. Ultimately, though, he does ask:]

Did you hurt someone?

If I'm a danger to people, then why wouldn't I? I'm not selfish! Even a mutant who doesn't mean to do any harm could be used to hurt people.

Uh... well, I don't really remember.

[He has no recollection of what happened when he was in that state, and he frowns, his expression making no secret of his guilt and unhappiness.]

But yeah... I did.

"Can be used"? They're not weapons. [But, again, he tries to sound less pointed when he adds:] There's a difference between deciding something for yourself and making decisions for other people.

I'm sorry about what happened, though, whatever it was. Since you're here anyway, maybe you should make the best of it and try to learn to control whatever it is you do?

They're like weapons, because they can be used as weapons. I know they have feelings and things like that, they're just dangerous.

Yeah...

[He doesn't want to talk about it, so he's quiet for a minute, before announcing, with a sudden, determined air:]

No, I'm never going to do it again!

Still, you can't think it's exactly the same thing as pointing a gun at someone and pulling the trigger.

[That sudden determination catches Carver off-guard, though it probably shouldn't. It's just that, for a second, he thought he might have convinced Eren of something.]

Well, if you don't like being dangerous, I say you should learn to control whatever it is you do. That's what my father did, and why he passed his lessons along to my siblings. Neither of them have hurt a hair on anyone else's head.

[By mistake.]

No... I don't think it's the same. But I do think they should be regulated. Not like weapons exactly, but like... dangerous people.

[Since everyone hates his weapon analogy so much, he'll state it differently!]

No. There's no way I can. It's not like that. I don't know what your power is, but... it's not mine.

[Eren's power is serious and horrible and totally the worst!]

Well, no, it's not. I can't hurt anyone with mine, even if I try. [He isn't saying this to rub it in, or anything like that. He just—thought he should make that point, since Eren is so insistent on labeling all mutants as dangerous.] My siblings are different, though, and the principle should be the same for anyone who has a power that could hurt other people. You're the one that thinks mutants need to be on a tighter leash, aren't you?

Right. I do think that. Yeah... that's right. If they could hurt someone. Then at least the government should know about it. The government knows all kinds of things about us anyway! Not that I think that's always good, but this is important.

It's not like it's going to be everyone, since they don't even know about most kids until their powers show up.

[Carver rubs his forehead. He doesn't want to argue about registration anymore, honestly.]

What I meant was, don't you think self-discipline is a good place to start? That'll do more to stop people from getting hurt before it happens.

Oh, that.

[He is so single-minded, he didn't understand Carver was changing the subject. He frowns, because he still finds the whole subject deeply troubling, especially since he still doesn't know what happened. He has the distinct sense that it was something really, really bad.]

If there was a mutant, and their power was just to blow things up, like a nuclear bomb, they shouldn't ever use it, right? Because people would get hurt no matter what. So how are they supposed to practice?

[He would be willing to concede that there might be some mutants that the government should be aware of! But then they would have to discuss where the line would be drawn, and the last time he conceded anything the conversation escalated kind of quickly, so he's not doing that again.]

I'm not an expert on these things, but from what I understand, you can practice not using something. If that mutant accidentally causes explosions when they're under stress, there are more options than doing nothing about that and keeping them a hundred miles away from anyone else, just in case. I think there are even classes on that kind of thing here.

[But are there classes that can actually keep Eren from getting angry???]

I don't want to take mutant classes and get brainwashed. Maybe you're right, but I can do it on my own.

Brainwash— Ah.

[Incredulously, he starts to blurt something out again, but this time he stops himself halfway. Trying to compose himself, he clears his throat.]

If you don't want to take a class, maybe you could talk to a teacher about private tutoring. If what you can do is dangerous, shouldn't you be supervised?

No. I'm a kidnap victim, and I'm here against my will. I can't trust these people, especially not the teachers. I'm not going to be indoctrinated in the mutant agenda.

I should get an attorney! I'm a U.S. Citizen, I have rights!

[He doesn't know how to do that, though. And he's a minor. It's not fair!]

I...

[He gives up. He's calling that, "Maybe you're right," a victory and tapping out.]

Well, have fun with that.

["Maybe you're right" is actually a triumph, coming from Eren. If he were to stop and think about it, he would quite possibly angrily take it back, but it slipped out.]

I mean, it's got to be against the law to hold me against my will, right? I should sue!

[Apparently, Carver has impressed him enough that he is going to ask him legal questions.]

I— Maybe? [What, why is Eren asking him that kind of question, should he be concerned??] You're a minor, so it depends on whether or not a court thinks you're in a "harmful environment"... I think?

[He doesn't know how these things work! But considering some of the things Eren has been saying, he's willing to bet that wherever he was beforehand, it wasn't good for him.]

[Because you're one of the few people who didn't call him a Nazi or something! Except for that one weird kid...]

Everyone hates me here, so it's pretty harmful! Just because I'm a mutant, I don't want to have to stay here where I'm going to be indoctrinated. I just want to be cured.

[Oh no. When Carver replies, he speaks slowly, being careful in how he chooses his words.]

I don't think everyone hates you... But if you've been going around saying the same things you told me, you probably made some people upset. Um, they just have strongly held opinions, like you do.

[He's trying to present the information in a way that Eren won't just immediately shut out, but that's hard!]
