THE TEST DRIVE MEME

Hello, True Believers!

This is for anyone wanting to test out their characters in the setting before the applications open, see what clicks. Multiples will be allowed for this post, and you can generally assume any threads are a self-contained continuity unless you feel like getting creative.

Just post a thread with your CHARACTER NAME and CANON NAME in the title with a prompt and others will reply. Prompts and threads can be action spam or prose or whatever. These threads can be used on the sample section of your application, as well. Go out and have fun!

Be sure to read up on all game information and the "!event" tag to make sure you have all your ducks in a row.

Like they can— Like they can do whatever they want!

[That slips out without him meaning it to. He's been trying to be level-headed, but he's too taken aback by that statement.]

My family spent our whole lives holding our breath whenever we saw a police officer, because if we so much as looked at one wrong, they'd practically call it a capital offense!

[He would address the other point also, but he's been thrown off, too incredulous to even be angry.]

[Eren is 100% not impressed by this anecdotal evidence. In fact, it just makes him mad again. He is a very angry young man. And not entirely rational at the moment, having been uprooted from his home and upset by recent events.]

Well, my family died because of people like—them. So yeah, they can do what they want! They can wipe people out and no one can do anything about it! Because everyone's too scared to stand up to them.

[He was this close to saying "people like you", but look, even Eren can self-censor! But then he decides to add something else, for good measure.]

And good, that's how it should be! Mutants are the ones who should be afraid!

[Oh, well, he's angry now. For a second, Carver even considers throwing a punch. He grew up shielding his twin sister; hearing someone say Bethany should have to be afraid just pisses him off.

Ultimately, he keeps his hands to himself, but even so, the way he shouts his reply isn't any more likely to deescalate the situation.]

Be afraid of what? Being treated like criminals for breathing other people's air?

[And Eren SHOUTS RIGHT BACK, like the shonen protagonist he is.]

I mean mutants who are gonna hurt people! Like how criminals are scared of jail, so they run from the cops. There should be something mutants are afraid of! But no, they can even kill the president and get away with it!

But that's not what we were talking about! We were talking about my family—!

[Carver cuts himself off, but he doesn't deflate. Instead, he just snaps his mouth shut, running a hand over his face a second later.]

I'm...just going to go sit down or something.

[Eren blinks. He honestly wasn't connecting the topic of conversation with an actual real family, having gotten so carried away by his "rhetoric".]

What? I wasn't talking about your family, I was talking about mutants!

[Eren...]

My family is mutants. You can't talk about one without talking about the other.

[And, you know, so are both of them, but this is apparently going unmentioned.]

Well, I don't want anything bad to happen to your family! That's not what I meant at all.

[Now Eren seems affronted that someone would think this about him! In spite of what he was saying.]

Well, I'd hope not. But that's the thing. If you say every mutant should be treated like a criminal waiting to happen, that means every mutant.

That doesn't change the fact that something needs to be done. The laws we have now aren't enough to protect everyone! I still think it's the right thing to do. There are going to be problems, but people will just have to get used to it.

[He's going to keep being stubborn about this.]

Right, well, I think we'll have to agree to disagree. [Carver doesn't have the wherewithal to keep arguing this issue. They're obviously not getting anywhere without one or both of them getting heated.] Just... Mutants are part of "everyone," and having them register isn't going to do a lot to protect them.

Fine. I will. Agree to disagree.

I care more about the rights of humans.

[Bluntly stated, but at least he's being honest? No, that really doesn't make it any better.]

I'm just saying my opinion. I don't expect anyone here to agree with me.

[Since you're all a bunch of weirdos!!]

Well, fine, but don't say you're thinking about everyone, then.

[He says that a bit pointedly, but the question he follows up with is much milder.]

Why even bring it up, then?

Okay, I'm not trying to say anything about people's families.

[Somehow, he manages to balance that contradiction in his mind.]

Because! I'm tired of not being able to talk because I'm surrounded by freaks! They might as well know I'm not the same as them. So—now everybody knows.

[A+++ reasoning there. Eren is good at making friends and influencing people.]

[Considering his own disconnect from the identity of "mutant," Carver isn't as offended by that statement as he could be, but even so—]

You are, though. You have a different opinion, but you're still a mutant freak. Isn't that why you're here?

I know I am. A mutant freak. [Although his powers just manifested recently, and he's still very upset about it, frowning as he says this.] But I believe I should be removed from society.

I didn't want to come here!

[Well, now this is just kind of depressing, and Carver isn't quite sure what to do about it. He shifts awkwardly, staying quiet before he finally asks:]

Where did you want to go, then? It seems like coming here is the best way to keep away from humans, if that's what you want to do.

[He's not the best at finding the silver lining, but.]

I didn't want to go anywhere. I wanted to stay where I was. My friends were going to take care of me.

[As he's Eren, and not subtle at all, he looks very obviously evasive.]

[SQUINTS

Is this a rabbit hole he wants to go down? Carver isn't sure. So, he asks:]

And this was going to remove you from society?

[Just so they're clear.]

I'm not a hypocrite!

[He really does hate hypocrites. So he feels he should point that out.]

If I say that about dangerous mutants, I mean me, too. And they were helping me!

[Carver winces, then holds his hands up, palms out and fingers spread.]

I wasn't calling you a hypocrite. I was asking a question. No need to jump the gun like that.

What were they doing to help?

I wasn't... People act like I say this stuff should be true of other mutants but not me.

[Though he has to admit, Carver didn't say anything like that. His less confrontational attitude makes Eren less sure of how to react.]

They were going to make sure I didn't hurt anyone else, that's all.

Well, it's a little hard to imagine someone wanting to be treated that way. That's all.

[But Carver will take him at his word! Eren certainly seems...earnest, if nothing else.

He folds his arms and shifts uncomfortably again, debating whether or not to let the subject drop. Ultimately, though, he does ask:]

Did you hurt someone?

If I'm a danger to people, then why wouldn't I? I'm not selfish! Even a mutant who doesn't mean to do any harm could be used to hurt people.

Uh... well, I don't really remember.

[He has no recollection of what happened when he was in that state, and he frowns, his expression making no secret of his guilt and unhappiness.]

But yeah... I did.

"Can be used"? They're not weapons. [But, again, he tries to sound less pointed when he adds:] There's a difference between deciding something for yourself and making decisions for other people.

I'm sorry about what happened, though, whatever it was. Since you're here anyway, maybe you should make the best of it and try to learn to control whatever it is you do?
